5S
5S, a tool that is often misunderstood as simply a housekeeping tool, is in fact much more than that. An organized workplace will aid in the elimination of wasteful activity, allowing more time to provide value to the customer. A common catch phrase used to describe 5S is “a place for everything and everything in its place”.
Many companies will launch a 5S program early on in there Lean journey to set the foundation for sustainable change. The cultural and leadership foundational elements necessary for an effective program aren’t any different than those needed for any change initiative. Specifically management support and commitment are critical and must be obvious to the employees of the organization.
Below are each of the S’s and a brief description of each:
Seiri (Sort)
Get rid of what is not needed. Extra tools, equipment, materials, files…
Seiton (Set in Order)
Organize what is needed based on frequency of use.
Seiso (Shine)
Systematically and consistently clean the work area.
Seiketsu (Standardize)
Create standard work procedures to develop good habits.
Shitsuki (Sustain)
Audit performance and continually renew commitment to the 5S program. Management sets the example for all to follow.
A well organized workplace will positively impact the morale of the workforce and the efficient use of time.
